Making the shop look like £39.99

Etsy listing design proposal — school book, boy edition

4 Aug 2026 · nothing has been activated · mockups only · ~30p of renders spent

The 60-second verdict

The current 4 draft photos are honest but read as homemade — real book on brown cardboard, flat light, no child, no message. Meanwhile the winning shops all run the same visual formula: staged children with the book, a photo→painted proof shot, bold trust badges, all 10 slots + video.

The open lane: nobody UK-based shows a child's photo next to their painted self. That is our whole product. I mocked up 3 directions below — pick one and I build the full set.

What Etsy shows now (the problem)

Draft listing today: cardboard background; photo 4 is a plain grey back cover. At £39.99 the photos must carry the premium.

1Warm & Real — lifestyle-led

Like Hooray Heroes / Wonderbly: our synthetic demo boy Oscar living with HIS book. Thumbnail = front-door shot: name, product and emotion in one frame.

For: instantly premium and human.
Against: little room for the trust promises on slot 1.

2Crayon Box Studio — brand cards

Our website palette as a listing system: cream, coral, teal, sunshine, chunky Fredoka claims. Every slide answers one buyer question.

For: maximum clarity + trust; a look nobody on UK Etsy owns.
Against: graphic thumbnails can lose to photographic ones in a gifts feed.

3The Transformation — proof-led

Like our closest US rival (500 sales in year one at ~$45): the photo→painted split IS the identity.

For: sells our one unfair advantage hardest.
Against: colder; warmth only appears deeper in the gallery.

My recommendation: lead warm, prove hard

Photographic child thumbnail (D1), transformation proof at slot 2 (D3), brand cards for trust/specs (D2). The 10 slots:

  1. Oscar at the front door with his book — the hook
  2. Money shot: photo you send / book that arrives — the £39.99 justification
  3. Same child on every page grid — kills AI-drift fear
  4. Real printed spread, re-shot warm — physical proof
  5. Bedtime with dad — the moment they buy
  6. Approve-every-page / refund card — the trust slide
  7. How it works, 4 steps
  8. Made to be held — specs
  9. School-morning still life — seasonal search anchor
  10. Shelf shot / girl-edition teaser

Video (10s, silent): photo dissolves into painted page, hands turn 3–4 real spreads (footage already filmed), back cover.

Honesty rails (all respected)

Oscar & Priya are our own synthetic demo children — product mockups, never presented as customer photos. The real printed-book photographs stay in the set as the trust anchor. Copy keeps “painted” + “checked by a real person”, never “hand-painted” (Etsy Creativity Standards). Nothing gets activated without you.
